Grande Island Goa: snorkelling, diving and boat trips
What the water is actually like, what you will see, and how to book a boat out to one of Goa's better snorkelling spots.

Grande Island, off the coast near Mormugao, is the closest thing South Goa has to a proper reef trip — not the Maldives, but genuinely worth the boat ride for anyone who has not snorkelled in Indian waters before.
What the water is like
Visibility is decent rather than exceptional, and it improves noticeably in the dry months. You will see reef fish, some coral and, with luck, a turtle — expectations set at 'a good introduction' rather than 'world-class reef' will leave you pleasantly surprised.
Snorkelling vs diving
Most boat operators offer snorkelling as standard on the anchor stop, gear included. Scuba diving is usually arranged through a separate certified dive operator based near the island rather than the charter boat itself — worth confirming which one you are booking if diving is the actual goal.
Best time to go
November to February for the clearest water and calmest crossing. The monsoon closes the route entirely, and the shoulder months either side can be choppier on the open-water stretch out to the island.
