Monsoon storage
From June to September the west coast shuts down for boats, and how a vessel is laid up decides what condition it is in come October. A badly stored boat loses more value in one monsoon than in three seasons of use.
Laying up properly
Layup is a procedure, not a parking space. Everything below gets done before the boat goes on its cradle.
- Haul-out, pressure wash and hull inspection with photographs
- Engine and generator pickling, fuel treatment and stabilisation
- Battery removal, conditioning and off-season charging
- Freshwater system drain, seacock service and dehumidification
- Canvas, upholstery and electronics removed to dry storage
- Cradle or trailer support correctly placed for the hull's structure
While it is ashore
Monthly inspection with a written log — cover integrity, moisture, pest activity, battery state. You get the log. Yards that store boats and never look at them are how owners discover mould in October.
Recommissioning
Antifouling, anode renewal, engine service, systems recommissioning and a sea trial before handover, so the first day of the season is spent sailing rather than troubleshooting.

When should I book monsoon storage?
Book by April. Hardstand space in Mumbai and Goa is genuinely limited and it is fully allocated by late May most years.
Is covered storage worth the difference?
For a boat with significant brightwork, soft furnishings or a painted topside, yes. For a hard-wearing GRP boat with a good cover, open hardstand with proper layup is usually fine.
Can I keep the boat in the water through the monsoon?
We do not recommend it on the west coast, and in many locations the harbour authority restricts it. If it is unavoidable we will set up storm moorings and a monitoring routine, but hauling out is safer and usually cheaper than the risk.
Does storage include insurance?
Our yard carries liability cover, but your hull insurance should remain in force through layup. Tell your insurer the vessel is ashore — the premium usually drops.
