Buy a sailing yacht
Sailing yachts cost less to run than a motor yacht of the same length and reward you differently — you go slower, you use almost no fuel, and you spend the afternoon actually doing something.
Monohull or catamaran
A monohull sails better upwind, costs less to berth and is cheaper to buy. A catamaran is level, has far more living space and shallower draft, and is easier on guests who do not sail. In Indian coastal conditions, both work — the decision is about how you will use the boat.

What the survey must cover
Hull and structure, keel attachment, rudder bearings, standing and running rigging with age, sails and their condition, engine and saildrive, and electrical systems. Rigging has a service life regardless of appearance — an old rig on a tidy boat is a large cost sitting just out of sight.

Is a sailing yacht cheaper to own than a motor yacht?
Generally yes. Fuel is a fraction, engines are smaller and work less, and many sailing yachts of this size are owner-operated rather than crewed. Rigging and sails are the offsetting costs, and both are predictable if you plan for them.
How old is too old for a sailing yacht?
A well-maintained GRP hull from the 1990s can be a sound purchase. Age matters far less than maintenance history, rigging age and whether the boat has been laid up properly each monsoon.
Can I sail a yacht in India during the monsoon?
No. The season runs October to May; from June to September the west coast is unsafe and most operations stop. Budget for haul-out and layup as part of annual ownership cost.
What size sailing yacht can I handle myself?
With Day Skipper level competence, most people can handle a 32–38 ft cruiser short-handed. Beyond about 45 ft, loads and berthing get demanding enough that you will want crew or a very well set up boat.
