A local's guide to Elephanta Island by boat
The ferry versus a private charter, what the caves are actually like, and the practical details that make or break the trip.

Elephanta Island sits about six nautical miles off the Gateway of India, and the boat trip out is honestly half the reason to go — you get a view of the Mumbai skyline from the water that almost nobody sees.
Ferry or private boat

What is actually there
The UNESCO-listed rock-cut caves date to somewhere between the 5th and 8th centuries and centre on a large sculpture of Shiva. From the jetty it is a climb of roughly 120 steps up to the caves — there is very little shade, so a hat and water matter more than most people expect.

Combining it with a charter
