Mumbai is not an obvious yachting city on paper — a working port, dense traffic, a monsoon that shuts the coast for four months a year. And yet yachting in Mumbai has quietly become one of the more interesting things to do in the city, precisely because so few visitors think to look for it.
This is the guide we wish existed when we started: where boats actually leave from, what a booking costs, what the water is like, and the small details that decide whether your afternoon goes well.
Where charters depart from
Almost every Mumbai yacht charter leaves from the Gateway of India in Colaba. You do not board directly at the monument — a tender ferries you out to the yacht at anchor in the harbour, a crossing of about ten minutes. Bandra Bandstand is used by a handful of operators for evening departures, and Belapur in Navi Mumbai is a genuinely useful alternative if you live in the eastern suburbs and do not want to fight South Mumbai traffic.
What a charter actually looks like
You arrive at the jetty, a crew member meets you, and the tender takes you out to the boat. From there it is entirely dictated by what you booked — a two-hour sunset run past Marine Drive, a half-day out toward Elephanta Island with a swim stop, or a static harbour charter for a party where nobody wants to feel the boat move much.
- Sunset cruise — 2 hours, the most booked slot, timed to leave the jetty about ninety minutes before sunset
- Elephanta day cruise — 4 to 6 hours, includes an anchored stop near the island
- Harbour charter — 2 to 3 hours, stays close to the city for parties and shoots
What it costs
Rates in Mumbai run from roughly ₹11,900 an hour for a smaller boat up to ₹30,000+ for a flagship motor yacht, priced per boat rather than per person. That figure usually covers the captain, crew, fuel for the standard route and life jackets — catering, decoration and water sports are quoted on top. The season
October to May. The southwest monsoon makes the Arabian Sea unsafe for charter operations from roughly June to September, and any operator offering to take you out in July is one to be wary of. December through February brings the calmest water and the busiest calendar — book sunset slots two to three weeks ahead if you can.
