Best yacht routes and cruises from the Gateway of India
Five routes that actually work, how long each takes, and which one suits a first-time charter versus a full day on the water.

The Gateway of India is the departure point for most yacht charters in Mumbai, but where the boat actually goes once it clears the harbour is where the day gets decided. Here are the five routes that come up again and again, and who each one suits.
1. The Marine Drive sunset run
Out past the harbour mouth and along the coast toward Marine Drive, timed so the sun goes down while the skyline is in view. Two hours, the most requested route in the fleet, and the one to pick if this is your first yacht cruise in Mumbai.
2. The Elephanta approach
A longer run out toward Elephanta Island, usually four to six hours with an anchored stop for swimming before heading back. This is the route for a proper day out rather than an evening — pack accordingly. If you would rather skip the boat entirely and take a dedicated crossing, see our Mumbai to Elephanta speedboat page.
3. The static harbour charter
For a party, a corporate event or a photo shoot, some charters barely move — the boat anchors close to the Gateway and stays there for the duration. Less motion, easier catering logistics, and the skyline stays in every photograph.
4. The Bandra evening loop
A shorter option departing from Bandra Bandstand rather than Colaba, useful if your group is based in the western suburbs. The route runs along the coast rather than into the open harbour, which keeps the water calmer.
5. The full-day charter
Combine several of the above — morning cruising, an anchored lunch stop, water toys in the afternoon, sunset on the way back. This only really works on a larger boat with the crew and space to support it; check our fleet for boats built for a longer day.
Picking the right one
First-timers and small groups should default to the sunset run — it is short enough to be an easy yes and long enough to feel like a proper outing. Bigger groups celebrating something specific tend toward the static harbour charter, and anyone who actually wants to swim should book the Elephanta route with the swim stop confirmed in advance.
